A mid-Michigan hospital is being recognized for it's emergency care.
A new report from Health Grades, a Colorado-based independent health care rating company says Allegiance Hospital has one of the best ER's in the country.
The emergency room isn't typically a place you want to be and that's why at Allegiance Hospital doctors and staff are trying to make it comfortable. @
"The goal is to get you seen very quickly by a physician or a physician extender, get the orders in, and follow best practice guidelines and pathways for everything from chest pain to stroke, to pneumonia to elderly care and pediatric care," said Rami Khoury, Allegiance Hospital ER Physician.
This particular award is based off more than seven million Medicare patient records.
It goes to hospitals that have about 40 percent lower mortality than all others.
While this isn't the first time Allegiance has gotten this kind of recognition, the hospital says it's all about constantly working to get better. @
"One of the things we've been trying to do over the past year is to spend more time with the patients. We are currently instituting a new process where we try to keep our vertical patients, vertical. What that means is, if you're a walking, wounded, or urgent-care type case, we try to keep you walking, so we can keep beds available for our sicker patient population," said Rami Khoury, Allegiance Hospital ER Physician.
Doctors say the award is a big honor. @
"It makes you feel good knowing you're doing an excellent job compared to your peers. But at the end of the day I think it's about doing what's best for our patients and community," said Khoury.
Hospitals in Traverse City and Detroit were among the top ten cities for having the lowest risk-adjusted mortality rates in the country.
