Ingham County Road Commission Could Soon Be Gone

County road commissions could soon be a thing of the past.

Tuesday afternoon Governor Rick Snyder signed a set of bills that would allow counties to dissolve their road commissions.

Governor Snyder says the road commission system has outlived its usefulness and doing away it would make local government more efficient.

Ingham County is hoping to do just that.

The five member board could soon be gone if county commissioners get their way.

Andy Schor, Ingham County Commissioner: "At this point, the county board of commissioners have said we're willing to take this under our wing and try and do this ourselves-- see what we can save and we'll be more accountable to the residents."

Governor Snyder says the new law will help create efficiencies in local government.

Governor Snyder: "Its something that we've gotten good feedback from a number of counties that I think are really going to be looking at this because again, its really looking out for our hardworking taxpayers in terms of a better way to show good government and lower cost government."

Lower cost is just one of the benefits Ingham County is looking for.

After years of turmoil and allegations of racism at the road commission, County Commissioner Andy Schor says they're ready to cut out the middle man.

Schor: "The controller would be the overall manager, with the operating manager and the other managers underneath her -- she would report to us."

But even with the bill signed, there's still more work to do.

Schor: We have to figure out -- how do you combine the pensions? How do you combine healthcare benefits? It's two very different systems that we have to combine."

But Schor says the work should be complete in the new few months.

Schor: "We just wanna make sure we get it right, you don't wanna rush something and then not get it right."

But he says once they get it right, it'll take just one more vote before this board is gone.

We also spoke with the Ingham County Road Commission Chair; he says he's disappointed the county wants to dissolve the board but says he will continue to work towards improving the road commission until a final decision is made.
