Michigan Ready To Trim Positions On Appeals Court

Posted:

Michigan is moving toward trimming the number of judges on the state's Court of Appeals.

The state Senate on Wednesday approved a bill (Senate Bill 849) by a 37-1 vote that would redistrict the court and leave it with 24 judge positions, down from the 28 now allowed by state law.

The measure is headed to Governor Rick Snyder, who has supported downsizing and hasn't filled two current vacancies on the court, leaving it with 26 members.

The State Court Administrative Office has suggested that the four positions could be eliminated because the number of filings in the appeals system has dropped in recent years.
