MSU Releases Full Video Of Lawmaker's Drunk Test

Posted: Updated: March 8, 2012 05:59 PM EST

New video of a West Michigan state representative accused of drunk driving was recently released by Michigan State University police.

It's the first time the full video of Representative Bob Genetski's arrest in East Lansing has been available to the public.

It's a story that's drawn a lot of attention and controversy. Back in January, Representative Genetski was pulled over in East Lansing by MSU Police.

However, until now, pieces of the dash cam video were edited out by MSU for reasons they say were due to personal privacy. But Thursday, the university reconsidered and released the whole video.

The MSU Police report sites expired tabs as the reason for the traffic stop.

MSU Police say Genetski told the officer he was coming from Lansing, headed to his hotel and had two alcoholic beverages throughout the night.

The officer says he could smell alcohol on Genetski's breath and he had slightly slurred speech. That's when his field sobriety test started.

Officers asked Genetski to count with his leg up and walk heel-to-toe.

"You know it's cold and I'm shivering right?," ask Genetski before he began walking.

The officers report said he did not touch heel to toe several times.

The officer then asked Genetski for a breathalyzer. He refused to take it.

"So you're telling me your not going to take it?" said the officer.

When Genetski confirmed he was unwilling to take the breathalyzer the officer arrested Genetski for operating while intoxicated.

Genetski's lawyer, Mike Nichols, released a statement that says,"I am pleased the full video was released to the public by Michigan State University... Bob stands by his innocence and only wants a fair trial like anyone else."

They believe all of the video should have been released. The statement goes on to say, as far as the content of the video, they wish to try this in court and not discuss evidence in the media. The statement ends by saying, "the video speaks for itself."

Nichols says a trial date has not yet been set.
