After decades of debate, Michigan amended its mandatory helmet law in favor of adult choice. This means motorcyclists can ride helmet free if they want.
Many bikers across Michigan say they agree with the law.
"Motorcycling is all about the excitement and freedom about being out in the elements," said Herb Rials, member of American Bikers.
"I just really like the freedom feeling, it's my choice to be out here and let the wind go," said Kim Vermillion, motorcycle rider.
Motorcyclists say helmets are uncomfortable and bulky. But by taking them off, they have to take on more responsibility.
"They want to ride without a helmet, but they are not really carrying the costs of riding without a helmet," said Pete Huhnmuench, Insurance Institute of Michigan.
That's because if a motorcycle gets into an accident with a car, automobile owners have to cover the cost.
"Rather than claiming against their own policy because they don't have one....they will claim from the car's company, which means costs for all drivers are going to go up," said Huhnmuench.
But bikers have fought long and hard for adult choice and they say they will be smart when exercising it.
In order to ride helmet-free, motorcyclists and their passengers have to fulfill certain requirements. That includes carrying at least $20,000 in additional medical insurance and they must be older than 21.
