Community Hopes For More Police On the Streets

On the streets and in the neighborhoods, even the idea of more police officers is welcome news.

Rina Risper, New Citizens Press Community Action Coalition: "It is amazing news, I'm very excited about it. We need officers badly!"

Risper says adding police officers would help address some of Lansing's problem areas.

Risper: "I think one of the biggest issues that we have facing the city is gun violence."

But she says police can't do it alone.

Risper: "We cant always rely on government or the police department to take care of our issues."

That's something Ron Leix agrees with.

He's active in his neighborhood watch group and says more police would be a welcome sight.

Leix: "There's never enough!"

Leix says recently he's seen a rise in criminal activity in his neighborhood.

Leix: "They apprehended the alleged serial rapist right down the block here."

And he says more police would reassure him of the safety of his 5 month old son.

Leix: "You know I don't want him growing up with some stuff happening around and with more officers on the street, it really could go a long way."

But negotiations are a long way from over and the proposal to add 12 more officers could end up as nothing more than that.
