UPDATE: Semi Truck Accident Leaves One Dead

UPDATE (11:26 am)

Around 6:30 Thursday morning on I-96 west, just east of the Martin Luther King Boulevard exit. That's exit 101 on the south side of Lansing.

When police arrived at the scene the semi involved in the accident was on fire. The scene, a mess of twisted metal, rocks and trees.

Police say a blown tire may have cause the driver to lose control of the truck, but that has not been confirmed and the accident is still under investigation.

Several witnesses say they heard explosions. One man said the noise woke him up.

The semi was hauling two trailers, full of large boulders, rocks and construction materials, which has made cleaning up the accident very difficult.

"Our plan now is to remove these boulders before we can remove the vehicle out because we don't want them to fall and cause another accident. These are very large boulders that can cause a lot of damage," said Sgt. Joe Brown, Lansing Police Department.

As of noon Thursday, I-96 is down to one lane, but Lansing police say there's a very good chance both lanes could be closed when they pull the semi out of the ditch. So, you may want to avoid the area all together.

Eastbound Edgewood is also blocked off.

Stay with 6 News, we'll bring you the latest as it becomes available.

UPDATE (8:28am): Westbound 96 is down to one lane but officials say it will be closed completely during clean up and an investigation.

They don't know how long the road will be closed, but they expect to remain on the scene for hours.

Police say the semi was carrying a load of construction equipment.

Witnesses tell 6 News they heard the sound of explosions from the scene, although it's not known if that sound came from the tire blowing out or the ensuing fire.

Chivon Kloepfer is on the scene and will be updating us all morning.
