Michigan OKs Medical Marijuana For 44 Children

Posted:

A new report shows 44 kids across the state have medical marijuana cards and of those 44, the Detroit Free Press found three of them aren't even ten years old.

Michigan's medical marijuana law is seven pages long and it does not list an age restriction for people to get a medical marijuana card. It does however require caregivers, those who provide marijuana to people with cards, to be at least twenty one years old.

The Free Press talked with Rebecca Brown, an Oakland County mother who says her 14-year-old son Cooper uses medical marijuana to control epileptic seizures. She said she tried other drugs but nothing helped and many of the drugs had terrible side effects.

According to the report, Cooper is not the youngest child with a card in Michigan. A child as young as seven has been issued one.

A person who runs a pain clinic in Haslett called Intessa says doctors there do issue medical marijuana cards, but only for people who are 21 and older. Doctors there say they only want to work with people who have legitimate conditions and don't want to open themselves up to drug abusers.
