Community Comes Together to Discuss K2

It looks like the real thing and has many of the same effects.

That's why on Thursday, the Michigan Senate approved legislation to crack down on synthetic marijuana, otherwise known as K2.

Synthetic marijuana- you can find it in nearly every community but Thursday night the town of Fowlerville faced the problem head on.@

Kris Nelson, Project Coordinator: "We're just wanting to raise awareness and educate parents in the community."

Speaking before a crowd of curious parents and community members, organizers read letters from students who have used K2.

The letters detail scary experiences.

One letter said "As I walked back into the door I lost complete control of my body and started convulsing uncontrollably and lost all verbal skills."

Another said "I've had times I cannot comprehend anything, nothing at all and my eyes roll in the back of my head and I feel like the whole world is upside down"

But the students letters also explained why they continue to do it: "the high is so addictive that you crave it no matter how nuts the last high was."

That's why organizers want parents to see just how dangerous the drug is.

They say without more serious legislation, it's up to neighbors to push the drugs out of their community.

Nelson: "That's when prevention and intervention works when everyone is aware of what's going on and then they have an opportunity to take action."

And they say community meetings are just the beginning of putting an end to K2.

The bill widening synthetic marijuana regulations now heads to the state house for consideration.
