Officials have released the name of the Waverly High School student shot and killed late Monday night.

17-year-old Denzel Moss had just finished the eleventh grade. He died at Sparrow Hospital early Tuesday morning.

Police say Moss was shot just before 11 p.m. Monday in the Silver Stone Townhomes parking lot off Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard. Officers were called to the area because of reports of gun shots. When they got to the scene, no one was there but they found Moss lying in the grass between two buildings. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officers say at least nine cars in a parking lot nearby were damaged by bullets.

At this point, police say they have no motive for the shooting and no one is custody.

The principal of Waverly High School says Moss was a great kid who was "always smiling, friendly to everyone and was very well liked.

"This is our third tragedy here at Waverly in the last year because we've had two middle school students: one drowned and the other was in a car accident. So just looking on Facebook, with all the kids, I just thought that they needed a place to be to just congregate and mourn together," said principal Vince Perkins

A memorial open house for Moss at Waverly High School on Tuesday. An online donation account has also been setup here, that's the Waverly website home page. Click on the "Payschools" link at the top left of the Waverly website homepage.
