Restraining Order Delays Opening Of New 911 Center

Posted: Updated:

The delay in getting the Lansing/Ingham 911 Center up and running continues.

Ingham county is under a temporary restraining order, which is stopping the consolidation from taking place for now.

The flag is up, the ribbon cut, and the doors opened. However, the Lansing/Ingham 911 center is not yet ready to go.

Last Thursday afternoon, county officials hoped this would be its grand opening.

But after the capitol area's Fraternal Order of Police filed a temporary restraining order against the county to not open the center, things got complicated.

"We're hoping it won't be much of a delay. Our attorney is looking at it to determine the substance of the injunction that's against us for opening," said Dale Copedge, chairperson of the Ingham County Board of Commisioners.

The FOP represents about 50 dispatchers between Lansing and East Lansing.

The organization's executive director didn't want to talk to 6 News on camera, but told us they filed the complaint because its members didn't feel they were adequately trained on the new equipment.

That could in turn put emergency callers at risk.

The East Lansing Police Chief says training is important, but can't prepare you for everything.

"It's very fast at times, very slow at time and the training is very difficult. There's a lot of different scenarios you just can't prepare for unless you do it on the job," Chief Julie Liebler of the East Lansing Police Department said.

She didn't want to comment directly on the court order, but says she's confident the county wouldn't open the center if dispatchers weren't ready.

The temporary restraining order was signed by a judge on Wednesday and will be in effect until Wednesday, July 27. However, a hearing on the issue is scheduled for next week.
