Romney's DeWitt Visit Draws Supporters, Protesters

Posted:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Hundreds of people who support presidential hopeful Mitt Romney endured blazing temperatures on Tuesday for a chance to hear the governor speak in DeWitt.

Governor Romney stumped in the area at the Sweetie-licicious Bakery Cafe, calling attention to the economy – an issue his supporters say is their top priority.

"You talk to people who know someone [who has] been laid off, [or] whose family members have had to move out of state to survive. It doesn't reflect the reality that the economy isn't doing fine. People have struggled under this president," says Matt Frendewey, communications director for the Michigan Republican Party.

But not everyone agrees, and protesters were on-hand at the event, voicing their disapproval of Governor Romney and his agenda.

"Our teachers, our firefighters, our police--that's what makes our country safe. So if he thinks we can do without that or make their jobs miserable by not giving them any money, then he is totally out of touch with what regular people need," says protester Valerie Smith.

This visit to DeWitt is the second to last of his current campaign in Michigan. After leaving Sweetie-licious, Romney headed to Holland to hold another rally.
