Eyewitnesses lead to a quick arrest in an overnight murder in Jackson.
Police found 22-year-old Ricky Upshaw on Adrian Avenue just south of Mitchell Street around 10p.m. Monday.
He was shot in the back.
Deputies arrested the 29-year-old suspect during a traffic stop in Calhoun County. The suspect is now in jail a parole hold without murder charges.
Still, this brings some sense of security to a community looking for answers.
A memorial is now set up where, last night, neighbors found Upshaw fighting for his life.
"We could tell his breathing got shallow, because they had somebody feeling his pulse. It's the first time I've ever seen somebody die," said Kathleen Brewer, a friend of Upshaw's.
Brewer didn't see what happened in the driveway next door, but she and her fiance heard the gun shot and came running. @
"He didn't deserve that. He was too nice of a kid for me. He reminded me of my son. He always made me laugh when he come around," Brewer said.
And while police can't quite answer the why question yet, they do know how it may have started.
"We are getting some information that some kind of argument preceeded the shooting. But we're still early in the investigation so we're trying to gather as much information as we can," said Department Chief John Holda with the Jackson PD.
Thanks to a couple of eye-witnesses who came forward this morning, investigators say they're getting closer to a resolution that will hopefully put this community at ease.
Police sent a report over to the prosecutor's office for review. The suspect could be charged as early as tomorrow afternoon.
