MSU Will Travel to Air Base in Germany for Season Opener

Posted:

Another basketball game on an air base and this one will be in Germany.

The announcement came Tuesday that Michigan State will open next year's basketball season against Connecticut at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

ESPN will televise the game on Friday, November 9th in front of around 3,000 enlisted men and women who will bring back memories of the MSU-North Carolina game last year on the USS Carl Vinson in San Diego.

The men's basketball coach Tom Izzo says this an incredible opportunity for the university's program.

"I'm thankful that ESPN reached out to us to be a part of this great event. Being a part in the first college basketball game to be played on a military base overseas is truly an honor," said Izzo.

MSU Athletic Director Mark Hollis refelcted back to last year's game on the aircraft carrier and reflected on the respect and admiration the team has gained for the men and women of the armed forces.

"Those troops, many the same age as our student-athletes, protect the freedom that we enjoy every day.  It is our responsibility to give reflection and support to these men and women that currently serve and have served in the past," Hollis said.

It's still pending formal approval from the Department of Defense.
