Amy Akers joined 6 News in June 2012 as a Social Media Reporter. She graduated from Grand Valley State University (Go Lakers!) with a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast News and a Bachelor of Arts in Medical Anthropology. Originally from the Detroit area, her curiosity and passion for news and all things social media brought her to Mid-Michigan.

During her time as an undergraduate, she won a Michigan Association of Broadcasters [MAB] award for excellence at the university and a first place MAB for a feature piece on how social media is being implemented in the newsroom. She also spent time interning at WOOD-TV Channel 8, in Grand Rapids.

Since being at WLNS-TV6, Amy has also picked up an award from the Associated Press for the Best Website in Mid-Michigan. She has also started working on her Master's degree in telecommunications and how social media is impacting journalism at Michigan State.

Amy also did a study abroad in Egypt. She loves to travel and has been around the world and back. She loves to do anything artsy, including paint and work with photography. Amy is extremely social and loves meeting new people. If you catch her around the Lansing area, be sure to say hello!
