It looks like the end of the road for a major redevelopment project in East Lansing.
Tuesday night, the East Lansing City Council decided to abandon City Center Two for good.
It's a plan several years in the making to turn the corner on Abbott and Grand River into a state of the art retail center.
"I think it would have been great for the community, maybe revive downtown Lansing even more," said Alexander Pearce, the Assistant Manager at Ned's Bookstore.
The city council decided to abandon plans saying it posed too much financial risk, leaving the area deserted again.
"To have out of towners look at that area and feel uncomfortable in our great community, that scares me," said Gail Catron, owner of Kirabo Fair Trade.
Local store owners say the proposed center would bring in a lot of business to downtown, and that city council's decision is a letdown.
"I was hoping it would go though, because I knew that it would increase my business," said Connie harper, Store Manager of Spartan Corner.
City officials say they will re-evaluate options over the following weeks, not giving up on developing the downtown area.
City council and Strathmore Development Company had worked together on the center. The company says they will also reassess their properties now that the plan is cancelled.
