The Partnership for Innovative Comprehensive Care, Inc. provides high-quality care and services for individuals with developmental disabilities throughout New York City. Clients of PICC, which is based in Manhattan, actively give back to the agency in a variety of ways, with one individual, Charlie Fernandez, serving on the organization’s board of directors.

Mr. Fernandez, who is a Manhattan resident, has been a client of PICC for 20 years. He receives in-home services that include assistance with activities of daily living, such as cooking and laundry. And for the past decade, Mr. Fernandez has served as secretary of the organization’s board of directors.

In this capacity, Mr. Fernandez attends board meetings, providing input on how the organization can better serve its clientele. “Other customers of PICC like that I am on the board, because I can help make sure their voices are heard,” Mr. Fernandez said.

Mr. Fernandez has also provided ideas for ways that PICC can expand its reach and grow its resources. For instance, Mr. Fernandez said he campaigned for PICC to increase its public relations efforts to better get the word out to the media and the public about the organization’s services, and PICC recently implemented his idea.

Besides contributing his time and unique perspective to the board of directors, Mr. Fernandez serves on the quality assurance committee, which is made up of customers and staff leaders who work together to identify safety issues. Mr. Fernandez also works in PICC’s offices, answering phones and performing other administrative duties. In addition, he conducts the first interview of direct-care workers who apply for positions with the agency.

“I am happy to give back to PICC, because they have done a pretty good job of helping me over the years,” Mr. Fernandez said.

“Having Charlie on the PICC Team -- whether in his role as board member, quality assurance team member or as part of our staff at headquarters -- confirms our vision and mission statement that developmentally disabled individuals are productive members of our society,” said Diane Vaughn, CEO of PICC.
