Early Morning Fire May Be Linked to Meth Lab

Posted:

The investigation into a possible meth lab fire continues, while a man is recovering from serious burns.

It all happened early Tuesday morning on Leslie Street and neighbors say they hope this fire puts an end to some "un-wanted" activity.

'It's scary. Very scary. And it's not something we want in our neighborhood," said Annette Wheeler.

Living just two houses down, Annette Wheeler and her family got a pretty scary wake-up call this morning.

"My whole living room filled up with smoke. The flames were huge in the back. It was black out, and that just totally just lit the sky up," said Wheeler.

And that's when she noticed a man running away.

"The guy that was on fire? He was charred, he was absolutely on fire. He was a white man that was black from the fire," Wheeler said.

That man was life-flighted to the U of M Burn Unit for treatment. Meanwhile, investigators spent the day on the scene waiting for a search warrant to go inside after firefighters came across some suspicious materials.

"They believe to be part of methamphetamine production. So the belief is that this was caused by a meth lab," said Detective/First Liutenant Tim Gill, the MSP Drug Task Force Commander.

That's not a huge surprise for these neighbors, who noticed a lot of traffic on this dead-end street.

"We have a month-old grandbaby living with us. And I don't know if they're doing meth down there, or any type of drugs, how does that affect kids in the neighborhood? Or any of the families in the neighborhood?" asked Wheeler.

Which is why Wheeler says she's glad for this morning's fire because it may actually clean things up.

The Tri-County Metro Narcotics Enforcement Squad started cleaning up the meth lab components Tuesday afternoon.

They say there is no immediate health threat to neighbors.
