Lawmakers to Vote on Doctor Malpractice Bills

Posted:

State lawmakers are meeting to consider a series of medical malpractice reform bills Wednesday.

Hundreds of doctors from across the state are in town asking lawmakers to support four Senate bills that would make it harder for patients to sue for medical malpractice.

Those doctors met this morning to show their support for the Patients First Reform Package.

Doctors say the bills will help close loopholes that allow patients to file what they call "unnecessary" lawsuits.

The bills would also help end default judgments against doctors by requiring trial lawyers to let doctors know when they're being sued.

"Doctors get sued at extensive rates. The majority are found to be uninsured. We want tort reforms to protect doctors in Michigan. It helps to protect patients, access to doctors," said Dr. John Bizon, the president of Michigan State Medical Society.

Legislators could vote on the "Patients First" reform package as early as Wednesday.
