Barge Spills At Least 1,500 Gallons Of Fuel Into Lake Huron

A barge involved in an oil spill leaked thousands of gallons of its fuel in Lake Huron about two miles off Lakeport, which is just north of Port Huron Thursday.

Local reports indicate the barge spilled between 1,500 and 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel and an unknown amount of oil.

The U.S. Coast Guard, hazmat crews and other boats laid booms to try and prevent the spread of the fuel.

The Port Huron paper says beaches are also closed temporarily while authorities assess the situation.

Lt. Dennis Maurey of the St. Clair County sheriff's office says everyone aboard survived. He didn't know how many people were on the barge.

The weather also proved difficult for clean up crews.
