Ricky Holland's Mother Seeks Custody Of 6th Child

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) –  The jobless and near homeless mother of Ricky Holland may have a chance to be reunited with her infant son.

Casey Caswell, 31, has had each of her six children taken away by the state due to her lack of stable housing and unstable employment. But on Tuesday, Probate Judge George Economy considered giving Caswell a new opportunity to be a parent to her 5-month-old son.

"I appreciate the Caswells taking steps, but [homelessness and joblessness] is not a new problem in this family. This problem has been ongoing for many, many years," says Judge Economy.

But defense attorneys say Caswell and her husband are trying to get back on the right track. "They need assistance," says defense attorney William Campbell. They realize they need assistance. They've been cooperative. They're doing everything under their power to provide a safe home environment for this child."

Prosecutors disagree.

"They have a long history of being homeless and having lack of income," says Attorney Steve Kwasnik. "The proofs will show that Mr. Caswell only has a 10-hr a week job and that is the sole income."

There is also some concern from prosecuting attorneys about Casey's husband's criminal past. Daphne Merryman of the Department of Human Services says Matthew Caswell Sr. was charged with criminal sexual conduct as an adult.

Court ended on Tuesday with Judge Economy allowing the defense more time to line up more witness testimonies.

The case will resume in September, when Judge Economy will decide whether or not the courts will take jurisdiction over Caswell's son.
