Hillsdale County Added to 'Disaster Areas'

Posted:

The Obama Administration has added 76 counties across the United States as "primary natural disaster areas" caused by the damage and loss of crops.

Michigan made that list four times, including once here in Mid-Michigan: Branch, Cass, Hillsdale and St. Joseph.

The addition brings the national total to 1,369 counties across 31 states as disaster areas, 1,234 all caused by drought.

Corn and soybeans both were rated in very poor to poor condition have been falling since the start of July and took a turn to very poor to poor at the end of last week. Pastures and rangeland have also taken a damaging hit. The continuing hot and dry conditions across the nation have caused the significant damage.

By designating disaster counties, disaster assistance programs then become available to farmers and ranchers. The USDA has traditionally responded by providing direct support, technical assistance and access to credit.
