UPDATE: Massive Fire Destroys Home

A massive fire has destroyed a 10,000 square foot home along the 500 block of Willoughby Road in Ingham County.

Firefighters tell 6 News that it started as a car fire around 9:30 p.m. The fire spread to the garage and then the rest of the house.

The flames were so large that people saw the flames from miles away. We have reports of sightings from Mason, Holt, Okemos, and from along U.S. 127. It's even visible from the WLNS Tower Cam near Frandor.

Firefighters say one person lived in the home and that he is safe. The Red Cross was on the scene to provide assistance.

The home has a Mason mailing address, but looks to be in a rural part of the county halfway between Holt and Williamston. That could explain why firefighters from several departments rushed to the scene to try and put the fire out, including Leslie, Onondaga, Holt, and Meridian Township.

The house is apparently out of reach of fire hydrants, which forced departments to truck water in to fight the fire. But the fire was so big that, after initial attempts to douse the flames, firefighters decided to let the home burn itself out.

Video from the scene shows the house largely reduced to a flaming pile of rubble.
