UPDATE: Gas Leak Prompts Neighborhood Evacuation

Some two dozen residents of a Jackson County neighborhood had to evacuate after a gas leak forced them from their homes.

It happened around 9 a.m. on Monday morning near the intersection of McDevitt and Bagg in Summit Township.

Officials say this all started when workers were doing construction on a storm sewer drain this morning. They say the gas line was right underneath the ground and ruptured when workers pulled up the concrete.

That prompted authorities to evacuate everyone who lived within two blocks of the scene.

Consumers Energy responded along with sheriff's deputies and firefighters.

Crews have plugged the leak and residents were able to return to their homes just before noon.
