Court clears Emergency Manager law for November ballot

Posted:

The Michigan Supreme Court says a referendum on the state's emergency manager law will appear on the ballot this fall.

Four of the court's justices ordered the petition to be placed on the ballot, after what was called a complex decision after a rare late term hearing by the court last month.

The four supporting the decision to put the issue before voters either said there was "substantial compliance" or "actual compliance" by supporters to get it on the ballot.

Much of the dispute was over the size of the font of the petition submitted to the state.

Friday's decision means voters will decide whether to keep or kill a law that sends emergency managers to Michigan communities and school districts to deal with their distressed financial issues.
