LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The deadline for a statewide student essay contest in Michigan is fast approaching.

The contest that focuses on the right to vote is part of next month's celebration of Patriot Week.

It's open to Michigan students in grades six through 12.

In 400 words or less, students are asked to answer this question: "How does a citizen's right to vote help make America the greatest country in the world?"

The deadline for submissions is midnight Friday.

Essays must include a title, the student's name, grade, address and contact information, including phone number and email address.

Students can submit their essays on the secretary of state's website or by mail.
