TMSG: Operation Homefront Michigan

"Back to School" can be stressful and expensive for many parents, especially mom and dads by themselves because a military spouse or family member is serving overseas. Yet a timely program fueled by your donations is helping those parents and kids get ready for the school year.

Pen and pencil in hand, Joshua Brown packs up a school bag donated to him through a program called Operation Homefront Michigan.

"It's touching to know a program like this is around because I know from serving overeas how tough deployment can be on families," said Joshua Brown, a former Army Specialist.

Families like his own now have to juggle military life and parenting, which can get especially tricky during back to school time.

"My sister is a single mom because my brother-in-law is now in Afghanistan and my two nephews stay with me," said Brown.

Operation Homefront Michigan helps families like Joshua's be ready for the school year by partnering with local communities and businesses to donate supplies. Those items then fill up "Back to School Brigade Backpacks" for the kids.

"It's not only the financial responsbility, but the time. When you have a mom or dad serving overseas, just finding the time to get school supplies can be a hardship on the family," said Sarah Davis with Operation Homefront Michigan.

Each backpack is loaded with all of the essentials: notebooks, binders, fun pens and pencils.

"I never knew when I was six or seven how excited I would be over crayons and markers, but when I gave them to my nephews, they were ecstatic," said Brown.

The program helps hundreds of Mid-Michigan kids each school year. The school supplies and backpacks will be sent off to area kids next week and throughout the rest of the month.
