Gas Prices Jump To $4 Per Gallon

Posted:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Gas prices in the Lansing area jumped about 25 cents a gallon on Friday afternoon. The rise in prices put the Mid-Michigan gas average near the $4.00 a gallon mark – some gas stations were even selling gas for as much as $4.09 per gallon.

Patrick DeHaan, Senior Petroleum Analyst at Gasbuddy.com, says the increase even took him by surprise. "I can't figure out why prices went up because wholesale prices are actually lower," he says. "Most of the time we can at least justify a bit of the increase by watching wholesale prices…but wholesale prices are actually 10 cents per gallon lower than they were last time prices spiked up to $3.95."

Right now, according to Gasbuddy.com, the average price for gas in the Lansing area is nearly 20 cents higher than the national average. According to DeHaan, the last time the Lansing area saw prices near $4 a gallon was this past April. He also says that supply is still tight, which could mean higher prices for the next few weeks.
