Folk Fest Kicks Off In East Lansing

The sound of folk music filled the air in East Lansing on Friday night as the 11th Folk Fest kicked off downtown.

The event, which runs through Sunday night is aimed at connecting cultures and uniting communities.

Outside the rain is falling as heavy clouds cloak the sky.

But inside, you'd never know it.

Robin Morrice, Grand Ledge: "Everybody's happy, everybody's got a little jump in their step."

Morrice says she never misses an East Lansing music festival.

Morrice: "Last weekend I was at the Jazz Fest, I try to make the Blues Fest."

And now Folk Fest-- even in the rain.

Morrice: "I like the music and I always run into people I know."

While the music takes the spotlight, organizers say, it's also about learning.

Lora Helou, Communications Director: Great Lakes Folk Festival: "We present this really as a living, breathing, exhibition. There's just really a lot of exploration, discovery and fun."

With a little something for everyone.

Helou: "We've got some blues, bluegrass, we've got Celtic music, we've got polka, we've got the Indian sitar."

That's exactly why Al Stewart says he's been coming to Folk Fest for 11 years.

Stewart: "You get to sample all of it and then the food's great too!."

He says that's why fans packed the dance floor, in spite of the puddles outside.

Stewart: "Tonight's a little misty but the music's outstanding and everybody seems to be really enjoying it."

Helou: "I think people realize this event comes around once a year and ya go with it!."

There are plenty of festivals to go around this weekend in mid-Michigan.

In St. Johns, the first day of Mint Festival fought through the rain.

It features rides and a petting zoo along with mint cooking contests.

Festival organizers say no matter what the weather's like, they anticipate a lot of fun.

In Mason, St. James Catholic Church hosts its "community festival and Camino."

It features a beer tent all weekend, a live auction tomorrow and 5k and 8k races on Sunday.
