Armed Home Invasion

Police say a woman is alive today, because of the heroic actions of three children.

Investigators say they prevented her estranged husband from killing her and potentially others during a home invasion.

This all happened around 6:30 p.m. Friday at an apartment on the 200 block of Oakgrove Avenue in Blackman Township.

Police tell 6 News the suspect was armed with a handgun and appeared highly intoxicated.

He reportedly fired shots at the front door before forcing his way into the home.

Police say one of the kids wrestled the gun away from him while the other two hid in the closet and called 911.

The man suffered some cuts and bruises, but no one else was hurt.

"This event could have obviously ended very horribly. If not for the heroic actions of the two small girls calling 911, and the 14-year-old wrestling the gun away from his father, this would assuredly have had a tragic result," said Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety Director Jon Johnston.

Officials arrested the suspect Friday night, but he has since posted bond.
