Stabenow Speaks Out About Romney's VP Pick

Posted:

Democratic U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow spoke in Lansing Monday, saying the selection of U.S. Congressman Paul Ryan to the GOP ticket for president will create a debate over American values including medicare insurance for the elderly.

Originally in town to talk about the federal agriculture budget, the subject quickly chanaged to election year politics. Given the selection of Congressman Ryan to the Mitt Romney ticket for president with Ryan wanting to privatize medicare for seniors, she contends he is wrong when it says his bill only effects those under 55.

"That's not true. They are talking about changing medicare so that it is no longer an insurance plan. You'd be back to trying to find private insurance with helf from a voucher. It doubles the cost over the long run and it doesn't work," said Stabenow.

Her opponent, Republican Pete Hoekstra also favors privatization of medicare and he contends it will work. During a recent debate, which Stabenow watched, Hoesktra revealed that he had a calling from God to seek this post.

Hoesktra refused to reveal if he supported federal aid for planned parenthood, while Stabenow openly does.
