Fred’s Thoughts on Week 1 of Prep Football

WOW!  What an opening week.  Ithaca is as powerful as ever as Coach Terry Hessbrook continues to shine the armour on a model program that Jim Ahern built when he was at Ithaca.  The Yellow Jackets just re-load every hear…and impressive 45 to nothing victory over an improved Williamston team on Thursday.

Speaking of re-loading and coach's shining, Rob Zimmerman at DeWitt may be THEE best coach in the area.  Another strong team appears to be looming as DeWitt opens with an overwhelming victory over Mt. Pleasant.  Another new quarterback star emerging under Zimmerman's genius offensive mind as Jacob Johnson threw for 246 yards and accounted for all 5 touchdowns in the Panthers' win over the Oilers.  Johnson is the younger brother of former DeWitt star QB Jordan Johnson.

How about the comeback by Mason in the opener at Okemos?  Down 17 to nothing, Mason showed it was Bulldog-tough in making the big plays down the stretch to spoil new Okemos Coach Jack Wallace's debut…24 to 17.

Bill Feraco keeps the engine churning at East Lansing, a 3rd straight win over Haslett in the season opener as E-L raced out to a 27 to nothing lead and coasted to a 38 to 18 victory.  Wide Receiver Javon Haynes appears to be one of the top players in the area to watch this season.

Lansing Everett was the Lansing State Journal's surprise pre-season pick to win the CAAC Blue and the Vikings came out flat, trailing Waverly 6-nothing at the half….then stormed back with 28 unanswered points behind improving junior quarterback Lucas Barner in a 28 to 6 victory.  But watch out for Waverly as the Warriors have much more fight than in the past under new coach Anthony Walker.

Best game of the weekend was at Laingsburg, where the Wolfpack opened with a heart-stopping 56 to 49 overtime victory over Sand Creek.  After taking the lead in OT, the Pack defense held Sand Creek on 4th down, setting up a wild end of game celebration.

What thrills and surprises are in store for Week 2? Hard to top the excitement of Week 1.
