Mid-Michigan Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

UPDATE: Private First Class Shane Cantu was killed after insurgents threw an explosive over the wall of his base. Cantu was on his first deployment to Afghanistan and had only been there a few weeks.


ORIGINAL: A mid-Michigan soldier was killed while serving in Afghanistan, according to friends and other members of the community.

Shane Cantu, a 2010 Corunna High School graduate, was confirmed dead Tuesday. The circumstances of his death have not been released, nor has the military confirmed his death, citing a waiting period after family members have been notified.

Military officials would say that Private First Class Shane Cantu was a part of Company B, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry.

But family members have been notified and according to the ABC affiliate in Flint, the family is headed to the Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to receive his body.
