Entire State of MI in State of Natural Disaster

Posted:

The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has declared the entire state of Michigan is a state of natural disaster.

The announcement came Wednesday when all 83 counties were upgraded due to losses caused by the drought and excessive heat that began in March.

"Although we are still determining the full extent of the damage, this year's extreme weather conditions have caused significant crop losses for Michigan's farmers," said Jamie Clover Adams, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Director. "Additionally, hay production has been impacted across the state which may greatly affect our livestock industry.  This federal designation provides much needed aid to Michigan's farmers and producers to overcome the weather related challenges."

The declaration makes farmers in Michigan eligible to be considered for assistance from the Farm Service Agency, provided eligibility requirements are met.  This assistance includes FSA emergency loans. Farmers have eight months from the date of the declaration to apply for emergency loan assistance.

"The federal designation will aid Michigan's farmers for crop losses due to the ongoing heat and drought conditions," said Governor Rick Snyder. "This disaster designation ensures our farmers and producers have access to additional federal resources to overcome Mother Nature's challenges."

For further information or to apply for assistance, farmers should contact the nearest county FSA office.
