Church Catches Fire in Residential Neighborhood

Firefighters worked to put out a church fire in a residential neighborhood Friday afternoon.

The New Testament Assemblies on the 100 block of Astor Avenue caught fire around 5:30 p.m.--that's off S. Washington Avenue and W. Holmes Rd, just south of McLaren Hospital.

An initial investigation leads fire officials to believe the fire started in the back of the building on the floor.

Officials believe no one was inside when the fire started.

Strong smoke and heat forced firefighters to vent the roof, causing extensive damage. Crews worked for about an hour to put the flames out. No one was injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
