State Police Boost Patrols For Labor Day

Posted:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest travel days of the year, and Michigan State Police say they've boosted their patrols in an effort to keep everyone safe.

According to AAA, more than 1.2 million Michigan residents have Labor Day travel plans, and 92 percent of those travelers will use a vehicle to reach their destination. State police say because of the high volume of traffic, their primary focus will be on patrol and visibility. "What the troopers are out there looking for is obviously speed violations, seat belt violations, alcohol violations, erratic driving as far as lane use or driving too close. Any type of hazardous action that could lend itself to potential of a traffic accident," says Sgt. Richard Hale of the Michigan State Police.

State police say there were 12 traffic-related deaths across Michigan over the Labor Day weekend in 2011, and while final statistics for this year haven't been compiled, they say there have been none in the Lansing area.
