Body of Mid-Michigan Soldier Returns Home

Posted:

The body of Private First Class Shane Cantu returned home today.

The Corunna High School graduate was killed during an insurgent attack in Afghanistan last week.

With a simple motion of their hand, whether waving or placed across their chest, hundreds lined Washington Street in Owosso to pay honor to Shane.

"I know that he is a son, a friend, a tremendous individual," said Superintendent of Owosso Schools Dr. Andrea Tuttle.

An individual that Dr. Andrea Tuttle says students often forget exist.

"People fought for us long ago and continue to fight for us and it's a learning opportunity for these students to know and it's our job to educate the students on the sacrifices that have been made to allow us to be educated and us live in such a great great nation," said Tuttle.

It's support that many say was the least they could do for Shane's sacrifice to keep that nation safe.

"With the law enforcement, even the bikers and the veterans that were standing at attention along the way, very good," said Brian Berry.

Berry says he was touched by the tribute, even though he never met the 20-year-old, but says he and the town of Owosso will never forget him.

"We come together and we celebrate life and we celebrate who the individual is and we have a memory of him and his family and we want to pay tribute to the veterans of our nation, that have served for freedom," said Berry, an Owosso resident.

A memory that today is shining bright in the minds and hearts of man.
