GOP, Democrats Hold State Conventions

Posted:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Both political parties have officially nominated their presidential candidate, but still had state-level nominations to finalize at their state conventions this weekend.

Republicans met in Grand Rapids on Friday and Saturday; Democrats are meeting in Lansing Saturday and Sunday.

One of the biggest issues at the conventions is making nominations for the Michigan Supreme Court. Republicans currently have a 4-3 majority, and Democrats are fighting to win control.

State Republicans announced late Saturday afternoon that they are nominating incumbent justices Stephen Markman and Brian Zahra, as well as Oakland County Circuit Judge Colleen O'Brien.

Democrats will finalize nominations on Sunday. They are expected to nominate Judge Connie Marie Kelley, Judge Sheila Johnson, and Bridget McCormack.

Both parties will also make nominations for the governing boards of MSU, the University of Michigan, Wayne State and the Michigan Board of Education.
