Middle Schooler Dies After a Swingset Collapses

Posted:

Grief counselors are at Hayes Middle School in Grand Ledge Monday after a student there died over the weekend.

The Eaton County Sheriff's Office confirmed that 12-year-old Wayland Baker died on Saturday when the swingset he was playing on collapsed on top of him.

Police say it happened around 6:30p.m. at his home on the 100 block of East Mount Hope.

The sheriff's department says Baker was playing on the swingset with some friends when it suddenly collapsed, saying the equiptment had rusted through at the base. EMS responded to the scene and transported the boy to a Lansing hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Three other children were in the area at the time of the accident, but no other injuries were reported.

The school also sent a letter home with parents explaining the situation. Anyone with any questions is encouraged to contact Hayes Middle School.

Students at the middle school were given the opportunity to make cards or write letters to Wayland's family.
