MI Attorney General Files Lawsuit Against Indian Tribe

Posted:

He promised to fight a new casino in Lansing, and now Michigan's top attorney has put that promise into action.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette filed a lawsuit against the Sault Saint Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Monday, in an attempt to stop construction of a new casino next to the Lansing Center.

Lansing City Officials and tribal leaders announced plans for the $245 million casino in January. They estimated the casino to bring in 2,200 jobs and millions of dollars in revenue to Lansing.

In the lawsuit, Scheutte says the tribe doesn't have a revenue sharing agreement with other tribes in the state which the AG says is illegal.

The tribe's lawyers argue the casino project is exempt from that agreement. The six count lawsuit does not name the City of Lansing or Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero as defendants.

The city and the tribe planned to close the sale of the land and apply to the U.S. Department of the Interior to have the land held in trust by November.
