MSU Professor Reacts to Libya Attack

The U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stephens and three other Americans were killed in what officials are investigating as a possible terrorist attack.

"Everybody who looks at this event and sees the violence, it's got to be condemned outright," said U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Associate Professor Salah Hassan at MSU says the United States needs to respond to Tuesday's attack in Libya.

"The real risk is whatever the United States does, will this produce more anger on the part of Arabs and Muslims or is there a way to address the security issues without antagonizing the already existing tensions," said Hassan.

Hassan says, most likely, that would mean small covert attacks similar to the involvement in finding Osama Bin Laden, not heavy gunfire.

"This is an attack that should shock the conscious of people of all faiths around the world," said Clinton.

While, Clinton says it's an issue that should affect many, Hassan cautions anyone, especially students, not to act out in rage.

"They should look at it as an opportunity for discussion and debate and try to seek opportunities to educate people more about Islam, rather than creating a distorted image of Muslims as terrorists, violent, which this incident unfortunately does," said Hassan.
