East Lansing Officer Makes Hundreds of Arrests

An investigation shows East Lansing arrests more drunk drivers than almost anywhere in the state.

According to our media partners at MLIVE, last year East Lansing Police arrested a total of 620 drunk drivers, that's compared to just 101 at it's Big Ten rival- Ann Arbor.

In fact, that report shows one East Lansing police officer arrested more drunk drivers last year than the entire Ann Arbor Police Department.

Travis Bove has been on the job for 7 years.

Officer Bove: "I started in late 2001, 2002."

But being a cop wasn't always his plan.

He was originally a business major but needed a change.

Bove: "My grandpa was a police officer for about 32 years. Changed my major and the rest is history I guess."

Since then, he's made catching drunk drivers his business.

Last year Bove arrested 111 drunk drivers, that's more than all 117 officers in Ann Arbor.

Bove: "Id like to think its making a difference, obviously its one of the main reasons why I became a police officer."

Bove patrols the streets of East Lansing for 12 hours overnight; prime time for drinking and driving.

He says the key, is paying attention.

Bove: "Stop sign violations, red light violations, obviously speeding violations."

But Bove isn't concerned about the numbers, in fact he doesn't really like to talk about.

Bove: "Just got lucky I guess."

What he is focused on is people.

Bove: "If I can keep the roads safer and keep drunk drivers off the road then that's a goal of mine."

And he says he has no plans to quit anytime soon
