Snyder Declares 'Welcoming Week' Starting Saturday

Posted:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has declared "Welcoming Week" starting Saturday as part of an effort to reach out to immigrants across the state.

The declaration was posted Friday on the state's website. "Welcoming Week" runs through September 23.

It says that people in Michigan should "create welcoming communities that leverage the full potential of all who live there, capitalizing on diverse perspectives, cultures and talents for knowledge, creativity and innovation." The aim, the proclamation says, is to make Michigan a better place for all.

The group Progress Michigan says "Welcoming Michigan" events are planned across the state in conjunction with "Welcoming Week." The "Welcoming Michigan" effort is a project of the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center with support from the Ford Foundation and W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
