LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The same 80 pairs of combat boots that walked the grassless terrain of Afghanistan for the last year touched down safely at home Sunday morning.
About 80 soldiers with the Michigan National Guard's 125th infantry battalion landed at the Capital Region International Airport shortly before 10 a.m., after a 12-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.
As family and friends rushed to embrace their army-clad loved ones, Sarah Sims held up a sign for her husband, Scott, introducing the 4-month-old daughter he'd never met.
"Having Cora in my arms – this is awesome," said Scott Sims.
Sims is a Lansing native with more than 20 years of service in the military. He left his wife a year ago when he was sent to Afghanistan, meaning she went through nearly all of her pregnancy without her husband by her side.
"It was very overwhelming and very hard," said Sarah Sims. "Fortunately we were able to Skype the birth, so he was actually able to see it over the computer. So, thank God for technology."
Sarah says she's also grateful that her husband is back home and safe her and their daughter.
"It's a really nice feeling being home," said Sims. "We still got a lot of guys that are doing things over there that wish they could be with their families. Hopefully they'll be home soon, too."
