Demolition will begin soon on the old Riverwalk Plaza Hotel in Jackson County. Commissioners are expected to approve a bid contract Tuesday, though it's going to be about $500,000 more than originally expected.
After saving up nearly $2 million for two years for the demolition, commissioners started accepting bids, the lowest coming in at around $700,000.
"But sure enough, he called Friday morning, and said he had to withdraw his bid. They said he'd made some calculation errors," said Deputy County Administrator Adam Brown.
Because of the last minute ditch, county administrators will now ask the board to choose the company that had the second-lowest bid, which is almost half a million dollars more.
"That is still within our original budget, which was $1.7 million," said Brown.
This is leaving the board with a good problem to have. Commissioners will now have to decide what to do with that extra money.
The demolition will likely start in November and the county hopes to have it wrapped up by March.
