3 People Dead After Crash on US-127

Posted: Updated:

Three people are dead in an accident that has police scratching their heads.

It happened just after 3:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon on US- 27 in Dewitt Township.

A van on its side, crushed.

A truck mangled in a ditch.

Brian Russell, Dewitt Township Police Chief: "We talked to several witnesses that saw the accident, they have no idea what happened."

Fresh tracks still run through the grass where police say a pickup truck crossed into on-coming traffic and hit a van, head-on.

Now investigators look over the twisted metal and shattered glass in hopes of figuring out why.

Russell: "We don't know if he fell asleep or what happened to him, had a heart attack or what, we have no idea at this point."

Chief Russell says all three people died on impact.

They include a 55-year-old man and 48-year-old woman from Elsie in the truck and a 68-year-old Lansing man driving the van.

Russell: "When you get two vehicles, even if they were only doing 55 miles an hour and they hit head on that's gonna be a pretty serious injury."

But Russell believes a simple guard rail could have saved lives.

Russell: "I think yea it would have prevented at least one death and probably 3 deaths. I don't like those wire guard rails they have but they do what they're supposed to do and so you gotta like em for that reason."

But its too late for safeguards in this accident that left three dead and police puzzled.

Russell: "We'll check everything we'll do a thorough investigation but it might be weeks before we get that information."

Weeks families will have to wait for answers.

Police have not yet released the names of the victims.
