UPDATE: One Dead in Overnight Car Crash in Jackson County

Posted: Updated:

A woman is dead following an over night car crash in Jackson County.

Michigan State Police Troopers say 29-year-old Jamie Lyn Hicks from Munith was headed North on Dunn Road in Henrietta Township sometime after mid-night when the accident happened. Officials say she then suddenly crossed into the southbound lane, left the road and rolled her car. Hicks was thrown from the vehicle and both ended up in a pasture. She was not wearing a seat belt and died on the scene.

Soon after the accident, a neighbor ran out to try and save her.

"As soon as I touched her, I could tell by the feel she was gone," said Charles Sturgill.

Charles Sturgill and his wife were sleeping and suddenly stirred after hearing a scary sound.

"Wife said she heard a thump, thump. This is an accident area here with this curve. So I knew it was a vehicle. So I came out, and saw headlights. When I saw it upside down, I knew somebody was hurt. Whoever it was, I knew they needed help," said Sturgill. "I never expected for her to be pinned under the car. I just regret there was nothing I could do."

As the scene settled down, the shock of what just happened was soon replaced with the shock of learning who had died in his front yard.

"Right at the end, I actually found out it was my cousin. I finally got a name from state police and I knew then, we were related," said Sturgill.

Sturgill knows her dad and was very close with her grandfather. But he says he hardley knew Hamie Hicks.

"It'd be rough for anybody to lose a 29-year-old daughter. And it makes me feel bad now, losing a cousin I didn't even know, and we only lived three miles apart," he says.

No other vehicles were involved.
