The three people who were killed in an accident on US-127 Tuesday night have been identified.
55-year-old Larry Salzwedel and 48-year-old Wilda Salzwedel from Elsie were both in a Chevy Silverado. 68-year-old Robert Cooley from Lansing was in the van.
Cooley was recently retired from the Okemos School District. He was a physical education teacher. He had taught in the district since 1968 til his retirement in 2011 at Kinawa and Bennet Woods Elementary. He was the districts first elementary physical educator and in 2004 was named the Educator of the Year for the State of Michigan in P.E. by the Association of Health.The truck went over the median and struck the van off Round Lake Road.
"He was a very outgoing individual. He was caring. He was genuine. He was fun. He was everything that you would want in a teacher and a friend ," said Superintendent Dr. Catherine Ash.
