Several Workers Laid off From Demmer Corporation in Lansing

Posted:

About 75 workers were laid off Friday from Demmer Corporation, a company that builds and repairs military equipment.

WLNS spoke to the Vice President of Demmer who told us they were hit hard with defense spending cuts and they had to align workforce to reflect current volume. The VP also said it was a very difficult decision, but 2012 has been harder than they predicted.

The Lansing Plant released a statement saying "due to reductions within the defense industry, Demmer Corporation had to make the difficult business decision to reduce its workforce."

Max Spencer was an employee with the company for eight years. Spencer said Demmer discussed possible re-structuring at a town hall meeting on Monday.

He says the hardest part about being laid off is losing his benefits and prescription coverage. Spencer says one prescription costs around $300.

"Ill have my lung benefits until the end of the month. I already have my prescription for my heart and lung medicine and after this month, I don't know how I'm going to get them," said Demmer.

Despite the news, many people said they loved their job, but understood the reasons for the cuts.
