MI Senate Considers Lottery Bill

Michigan lawmakers are considering a bill that could keep multistate lottery winners anonymous.

State Senators say the bill would prohibit the disclosure unless the winner agrees to it in writing.  Currently, lottery officials are authorized to say or show the multistate winners.

A Republican bill sponsor says the proposal is a way to help keep the privacy and safety of winners.  The bill however, still faces some criticism from a couple of groups.

Lottery officials say disclosure is important because it shows people win prizes.  Meanwhile, Members in the Senate Fiscal Agency believe if enacted, the bill could decrease media coverage and the promotional impact of prizes.  Which means that could reduce money going into the school aid fund.

Last year more than $727,000,000 went into that fund.
